Editorial Notice & Safety Status
Official government foreign ministries unanimously advise against all travel to Ukraine due to ongoing armed conflict, active missile and drone strikes, and closed civilian airspace. Ordinary leisure tourism is completely suspended. This guide is provided strictly for humanitarian workers, journalists, diplomatic personnel, and essential family transit.
Airspace Closure & Overland Entry Only
All civilian passenger flights to and from Ukraine have been suspended since February 24, 2022. All entry into Ukraine must be made overland across western international borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova.
- Primary Rail Corridors:
- Przemysl (Poland) to Lviv & Kyiv: The most heavily utilized transit route. Polish PKP Intercity trains connect major European hubs to the border station of Przemysl Glowny. Broad-gauge Ukrainian InterCity+ trains (Hyundai Rotem) operate daily directly from Przemysl to Lviv (2h 30m) and Kyiv (7h 30m).
- Chelm / Warsaw (Poland) to Kyiv: Daily direct sleeper train (Kyiv Express #68) departing Warsaw Centralna.
- Chisinau (Moldova) to Kyiv: Direct overnight passenger rail service (#351 Train of Victory) connecting Moldova and Ukraine via Mohyliv-Podilskyi.
- Booking Rail Tickets: International tickets must be booked in advance directly on the official Ukrzaliznytsia mobile app or booking.uz.gov.ua. High-demand services require electronic identity verification via the Ukrainian Diia platform.
Martial Law Regulations & Daily Realities
- Nightly Curfew: All regions of Ukraine operate under strict municipal curfews (typically 00:00 to 05:00 in Kyiv and western regions, with longer hours in eastern and southern zones). Being on city streets, driving, or being outdoors during curfew hours without an official military permit is illegal and subject to detention.
- Air Raid Sirens & Civil Defense: Air raid alerts sound regularly across all regions. Essential travelers must install the official mobile app Air Alert (Povitryana Tryvoga) and proceed immediately to reinforced underground shelters (including metro stations and hotel basements) upon siren sounding.
- Insurance Requirements: Standard European travel insurance policies contain war exclusion clauses and are void in Ukraine. Essential travelers must obtain specialized international war-risk and medical evacuation insurance.
- Currency & Payments: International Visa and Mastercard bank cards generally function for contactless payment in retail stores, hotels, and supermarkets in major cities, but foreign currency cash (Euros or USD) should always be carried.
