Berlin to Prague: travel options

The direct train is the practical default

For most city-centre trips, take a direct train and plan on roughly four hours between Berlin and Prague. DB's dated planner showed direct examples from 3 hours 47 minutes to 4 hours 10 minutes when reviewed on 21 September 2026, while its wider Europe offer describes the corridor as about 4 hours 15 minutes. Your train can differ with the date, stops and engineering work, so use those figures for planning rather than as a timetable promise.

Add the journey to Berlin Hbf, time to find the platform and the local trip from the Prague arrival station to the room. An early departure can leave a gentle afternoon in Prague. A later train protects the Berlin morning but makes a timed castle visit on arrival a poor plan.

Compare the same departure with DB and ČD

Search the exact train with Deutsche Bahn and České dráhy. Compare the total in the currency you will pay, the train number, refund and exchange rules, and whether a seat reservation is included or optional.

The cheapest fare may bind you to one train. If a flight or separately booked service brings you into Berlin that morning, a more flexible fare or a larger buffer can be worth more than a small saving.

ČD says its modern ComfortJet trains operate on the Berliner line. Check the dated result for the actual train, carriage and onboard services rather than assuming every departure has the same layout.

Reserve seats when sitting together matters. Add a bicycle, large item or assistance request through the operator's stated process before travel; an ordinary passenger ticket does not guarantee space for unusual equipment.

Berlin Hbf is the usual starting point in Berlin, but the ticket decides where you board. In Prague, Praha hlavní nádraží (Praha hl.n.) and Praha-Holešovice are different stations. Current direct services can use either, so compare the arrival with the journey to your accommodation before choosing between similar fares.

Keep the ticket available offline and check the departure board for the current platform. If the booking uses more than one train, confirm whether it is one through ticket and what the operator says about a missed connection.

Treat the journey as a travel day, not a sightseeing guarantee

The railway follows the Elbe corridor through Dresden. A window seat can be pleasant, but the direction of travel and view from a particular side can change with the train formation. Do not pay extra on the strength of a guaranteed “best side”.

Bring water and food if you need certainty for cost or dietary reasons. Catering and its opening time depend on the service.

For a planned stop, use Berlin to Dresden and Prague to Dresden as separate route guides. Do not turn a through ticket into a stopover without checking whether its conditions allow it.

Make the Prague arrival easy

Use the Prague guide to choose the local ticket and route from the station. Leave the first block of time for collecting bags, checking in and eating. A nearby walk is more resilient to a delay than a prepaid attraction.
