Berlin's Three Concentric Circles

Berlin’s public transit network (BVG / S-Bahn Berlin) is divided into three concentric fare zones:

  • Zone A: Berlin’s inner city within the circular Ringbahn S-Bahn line.
  • Zone B: The area outside the Ringbahn extending to the official Berlin city boundary.
  • Zone C: Greater metropolitan area extending roughly 15 km outside Berlin city borders, including Potsdam and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).

The Most Common Tourist Mistake

Standard city tickets cover Zones AB (€3.50). Many travelers land at BER Airport and buy an AB ticket because it is cheaper. However, BER Airport is located entirely within Zone C. Plainclothes ticket inspectors target the airport S-Bahn lines and issue non-negotiable €60 fines on the spot.

If you are traveling to or from BER Airport or visiting Potsdam, always buy an ABC ticket (€4.40). Within central Berlin, an AB ticket covers all travel.
