2. Tempelhofer Feld: The Airport Converted to a Park
A former Cold War airport where the Berlin Airlift landed in 1948, Tempelhof was preserved by citizen referendum as a vast public park. Today, locals rollerblade, cycle, and picnic along the original two-mile concrete airport runways.
3. Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße
Skip the commercial souvenir actors at Checkpoint Charlie. The official national memorial at Bernauer Straße preserves an intact 1.4 km stretch of the original border strip, complete with watchtower, death strip, and an outdoor historical documentation center.
