Free gardens in Vienna and Munich
Give Schönbrunn's main park or Munich's English Garden a proper visit, with clear expectations about paid attractions and current access.
A park day can be a welcome break between museums, especially if you choose a route with places to rest. Vienna's Schönbrunn grounds and Munich's English Garden both offer plenty to enjoy without an entrance ticket. They are large enough that choosing a section is more useful than trying to cover everything.
Schönbrunn, Vienna
The main palace park is free during its opening hours. Begin behind the palace and decide whether to stay around the formal grounds or continue uphill towards the Gloriette. The climb gives a different view, but you can enjoy the garden without doing it.
Palace interiors, the zoo and special garden attractions are separate paid visits. A free walk through the grounds does not include the maze or the Gloriette's rooftop panorama terrace. Check the park's closing time and your nearest exit before settling down for a long rest.
English Garden, Munich
For a shorter visit, start at the southern end near the Haus der Kunst and follow the paths into the park. Continue towards the Monopteros area if you want a longer walk, then choose somewhere to turn back. Keep an eye out for cyclists and do not leave belongings blocking a path.
The Eisbach wave has had changing access rules. Munich's official notice of 8 May 2026 reopened surfing under conditions, replacing earlier closure advice. Follow the latest signs on the day. Watching from the public area is different from entering the water, which is not a casual swimming stop.
There is no need to plan the whole visit around seeing surfers. Water conditions and restrictions can change, while the park itself offers space for a walk and a break.
