Piran or Dubrovnik for a town-wall walk?
Compare two different coastal visits, with a shorter hilltop wall section in Piran and a much larger circuit around Dubrovnik's old town.
Piran and Dubrovnik both offer views over a coastal old town, but their wall visits are different in scale. Piran has a shorter surviving section on the hill above town. Dubrovnik's walls form a substantial circuit around the old city. Choose the place that fits your route, since they are far apart along the Adriatic region.
Piran for a shorter climb and view
The official Piran wall visit includes a walk along the preserved walls and access to three defensive towers. Admission is €4 per person.
The approach from the centre is uphill, and the wall visit involves steps and narrow sections. The operator advises against the visit for people with reduced mobility and closes the walls in bad weather. Check the day's opening time rather than assuming a sunset visit will fit.
You can combine it with a walk through Piran and time by the sea without making the walls the entire day's activity.
Dubrovnik for the full circuit
Ordinary adult wall admission is €40. Compare the official wall ticket with the €40 daily Dubrovnik Pass before paying; the pass can add included museums and city-bus travel to a wall visit. The pass conditions allow one visit to each included cultural sight. Keep your ticket and plan water, breaks and your exit before starting the wall circuit.
The circuit has many steps and exposed sections. Allow more time than you would for Piran, and consider an earlier visit in hot weather. Check exactly what a city pass includes before buying a separate wall ticket.
Compare the experience, not just the fee
A lower admission price does not make one town a replacement for the other. Piran fits a Slovenian coast or northern Adriatic trip. Dubrovnik fits a southern Croatian itinerary and a longer old-town visit.
