Staying in European hostels is the premier way to keep accommodation costs under €30 per night in major capitals like Lisbon, Madrid, Prague, and Berlin while meeting fellow independent travelers. However, navigating a shared 6-bed or 8-bed dorm requires understanding universal unspoken standards.
1. The Padlock Rule
Never check into a hostel without your own sturdy combination padlock. Almost all modern European hostels provide under-bed storage cages or individual lockers, but they rarely provide the locks. Hostels will sell you a cheap padlock at reception for €5 to €8, which is an unnecessary expense. Bring a standard 4-digit combination lock with a medium shackle that fits standard locker hasps.
2. Bedding and Towel Logistics
- Linen: European hostels almost universally include clean bed linen (fitted sheet, duvet, pillowcase) in the nightly rate. Bringing a sleeping bag into European dorms is frequently prohibited due to bedbug prevention protocols.
- Towels: Unlike bed sheets, bath towels are rarely included in basic dorm rates. Reception typically charges €2 to €4 for towel rental. Pack a lightweight, fast-drying microfiber travel towel to avoid recurring rental fees.
3. Noise and Light Discipline
- Pack your bag the night before: If you have an early morning 06:00 flight or train departure, organize your backpack completely before going to sleep. Never rustle plastic bags or turn on the overhead dorm lights at 05:00.
- Use a red-light headlamp or phone screen: Keep lighting minimal when entering dorms after 22:00.
- Earplugs and eye masks are non-negotiable: Carry silicone or foam earplugs (Hearos or Mack's) and an eye mask to guarantee uninterrupted sleep regardless of snoring roommates.
