Eating well at European food markets
Decide whether you want produce, a picnic or a counter meal, then compare portions and prices before ordering.
Walk through the market once before buying lunch. You will get a better sense of the choices, prices and places to sit, and you are less likely to spend the whole budget at the first attractive counter.
A produce market and a food hall are different experiences. One mainly serves people buying ingredients; the other may focus on ready-to-eat meals. Many markets mix the two, so decide what you need from the visit.
Shopping or sitting down
For a picnic, look for food you can eat with the equipment you have. Bread, fruit and a small amount of filling are easier than a purchase that needs a kitchen. Ask whether a cheese or deli stall can sell a smaller portion.
For a counter meal, read the menu and see whether you order first, pay first or wait to be seated. Check the price of drinks and side dishes before treating the displayed main as the full cost.

Read the unit beside the price
A price may be per kilo, per 100 grams, per piece or per portion. Ask for the amount you want and confirm the total before it is packed. This is especially helpful with cheese, seafood and prepared deli food.
Buying more is not a saving if you cannot finish or store it. Sharing a modest portion can be a better way to try something than buying several large items for a short visit.
Ask about ingredients and handling when needed. A friendly stallholder can explain the dish more clearly than a short translated label, but do not guess if an allergy matters.
Match the visit to the day
Check the market day before travelling there. Amsterdam's Albert Cuyp market, for example, normally runs Monday to Saturday. An evening food-hall plan does not tell you when a traditional morning market opens.
