Using OVpay on Dutch public transport
Pay for Dutch train, tram, metro and bus journeys with a supported card, and know what to do if a check-in or check-out goes wrong.
OVpay lets you use a supported contactless bank card or device for many ordinary public transport journeys in the Netherlands. The main habit to learn is simple: check in at the start and check out at the end with the same card or device.
Take that card out of your wallet before holding it against the reader. This helps avoid presenting two payment cards at once or using a different card by mistake.
One traveller, one payment method
NS's payment-card guidance explains that an ordinary bank-card check-in is for second-class travel without a discount on its trains. Do not assume a railcard discount or a first-class upgrade will be applied automatically.
A physical bank card and its version on a phone are separate payment methods at the reader. If you start with your phone, use that same phone to finish. A watch linked to the same account is also a different device.
Each person needs their own valid ticket or supported payment method. You cannot simply tap one card several times to cover a whole family. For children or travellers using a discount, compare the appropriate ticket before choosing how to pay.
Check the operator when changing
When you leave a train and continue by metro, tram or bus, finish the first journey and start the next one as required. At a railway station served by more than one operator, check the name on the reader.
Do not tap a bank card as an extra step if you already hold an e-ticket for the journey. Follow that ticket's gate instructions instead. Mixing the two can leave you paying for a journey twice.
If the charge looks wrong
The reader does not normally show your final fare immediately. Charges can appear later on your bank statement, so look up the journey details before deciding what went wrong.
NS's help page for NLOV charges explains how to use the payment reference and charged amount to find a journey in OVpay. Check for a missing check-in or check-out and follow the correction process. Never post the full reference or your card details in a public forum.
