Nice or Cannes for a Riviera holiday?

Choose Nice for a varied city base or Cannes for a trip centred on sandy beaches. Compare accommodation on the same dates before deciding.

On this page

Choose between Nice and Cannes by the days you want to have, then compare rooms for the same dates. There is no dependable rule that one city is always cheaper. A festival, conference or a particular room offer can change the answer.

Nice suits a trip that mixes neighbourhood walks, food, the seafront and excursions east towards Monaco. Cannes is worth considering when a sandy beach and a smaller central area are high priorities. You can visit the other city without moving accommodation for the night.

Beach days feel different

Nice's main seafront is known for its pebbles, as the local tourism office explains. Bring something comfortable to sit on and footwear that suits you. Look at the actual public beach access near your accommodation rather than assuming every seafront hotel has a private beach included.

Cannes Tourism's beach guide describes sandy public and private beaches. A public beach day and a paid beach-club day have very different budgets. Read the charges for loungers, umbrellas and food separately if you want the latter.

If children mainly want to play on sand, that can reasonably outweigh a small accommodation saving elsewhere. If the beach is only one afternoon of the trip, give the city and transport choices more weight.

Compare the days away from the beach

In Nice, the Old Town, port and Libération area offer different walks and food stops. The tourism office's suggested city routes can help locate the places that interest you without following a fixed itinerary.

For Cannes, compare the location of your room with the beach, station and the part of town where you want to spend evenings. A property advertised as Cannes may be less convenient for a walking holiday than its headline description suggests.

Check the Cannes events calendar before comparing accommodation. Major professional events occur beyond the film festival, so looking only at May does not catch every busy period.

Price the whole stay

Compare these items using the same assumptions:

Decision What to compare
Accommodation Total for the same nights, occupancy, taxes and cancellation terms
Airport journey Route from the actual terminal to the room, including the final connection
Day trips Tickets for places you genuinely want to visit
Beach spending Public access or the paid facilities you intend to use

Nice has a direct tram link between the airport and central stops; the airport guide explains the ticket choices. A Cannes stay needs its own full transfer calculation, so do not use the Nice tram price as the cost of reaching Cannes.

If your main plans are Nice and Monaco, staying in Nice reduces repeated travel. If most days are on the beach in Cannes, book there and make Nice an outing. The Nice accommodation guide helps narrow the neighbourhood choice if Nice fits your trip better.
