Rental-car costs to check before paying
Compare the final booking with the cover and route you need. The cheapest daily rate can leave out the most expensive part of the trip.
Compare car rentals using the final amount for your dates, driver and route. A daily rate alone leaves out too much, especially if you need another driver, a different return location or permission to cross a border.
Keep the booking conditions with the confirmation. If a broker sells the reservation, check which company supplies the car and whose terms govern collection and damage charges.
Insurance and excess are different checks
The EU's rental-car guidance explains that third-party liability cover should be included for rentals in the EU. Damage to the hire car and other risks need their own checks.
Read the excess, exclusions and deposit requirements. Ask whether glass, tyres, keys or the underside are covered. An outside excess-reimbursement policy may repay a qualifying claim later while leaving you responsible for paying the rental company first.
Make sure the main driver's payment card meets the company's requirements and has enough available balance for the deposit. A prepaid booking does not necessarily remove the need for a card at collection.
Put the route in writing
Tell the company every country you intend to visit. Obtain permission, fees and cover details before travel. This is particularly important when moving between EU and non-EU countries, where customs or insurance issues can arise.
Check whether ferries, islands or particular roads are restricted. A map showing a driveable route does not tell you whether the rental agreement permits it.
Collection and return
At pickup, inspect the vehicle and record existing damage with staff. Take clear photographs and retain the condition report. Check the fuel or battery level and make sure you understand the return arrangement.
Before returning, follow the agreed fuel or charging policy. Retain the final receipt and photograph the vehicle and dashboard. If returning after hours, use the designated process and keep evidence of when and where you left it.
Allow time to resolve a query before your flight. A rushed handover is a poor moment to discover that the office is elsewhere or that the fuel station is closed.
