Eurail or individual train tickets?
Compare a European rail pass with the actual journeys on your route, including current reservation fees, eligibility and Swiss transport alternatives.
Price your actual train journeys before buying a European rail pass. A pass can offer useful flexibility, but its purchase price is only one part of the total. Reservations, uncovered services and unused travel days can change the comparison.
On 8 September 2026, the official pass website announced that Eurail would use the Interrail name worldwide from 9 September, with existing passes, bookings and accounts retained. Select your real country of residence and read the product's eligibility and home-country conditions when buying, rather than relying on the name alone.
A route to calculate
Consider four separate travel days: London–Paris, Paris–Brussels, Brussels–Amsterdam and Amsterdam–Berlin. Stay several nights between journeys if that fits your holiday; a travel day is not a requirement to change cities every morning.
HŽ Passenger Transport's published 2026 tariff lists the ordinary adult second-class Global Pass for four days in one month at €283. Promotions and the price shown for your residence or currency may differ.
The official reservation-fee table, checked on 8 September 2026, lists Eurostar Standard passholder reservations at €35 for London–Paris and €27 for Paris–Brussels. Using those trains brings this example to €345 before any reservation or booking costs on the other legs. Check the specific Brussels–Amsterdam service, as its reservation requirement depends on the train chosen.
Now obtain individual-ticket quotes for all four departures with the same class and passengers. Compare their combined total with the completed pass calculation. We have not obtained live individual fares for a selected travel date here, so this example does not declare a cheaper winner.
Availability matters as much as price
Some trains have limited passholder reservation availability. A pass does not guarantee a seat on the departure you want. Check key reservations before committing, particularly Eurostar and international high-speed services.
Compare refund and exchange conditions too. Fixed advance tickets and a flexible pass offer different choices if your plans change. Do not count a pass's flexibility as useful on a route whose required reservations are already fixed.
Switzerland needs a separate comparison

For a few fixed journeys, start with individual operator tickets. For a longer or less settled route, calculate the pass total with every compulsory extra included, then decide how much its remaining flexibility is worth to you.
