Kuressaare Travel Guide
Kuressaare gives you a comfortable base for Saaremaa, with a castle, seaside walks and time to plan an island outing. Stay at least two nights if you are arriving by coach; three nights give the journey and the island more breathing room.

Leave enough time after the journey
Kuressaare works better as a stay than as a quick check mark. A coach from Tallinn takes around four hours, including the ferry crossing. With two nights you have a full day in town; a third gives you room for an island outing without travelling again straight away.
Choose between staying near the central shops and coach station or nearer the castle and seafront. Both can work for a town break. If the room includes spa access, read the permitted hours and facilities before treating it as a saving.
Understand where the ferry goes
The mainland ferry crosses from Virtsu to Kuivastu on Muhu. It does not arrive in Kuressaare. A through coach continues over the causeway to Saaremaa and on to town. Follow the driver's instructions during the crossing and keep your ticket and valuables with you.
Visit Saaremaa explains the connections. Our Tallinn route and Pärnu route help you plan the whole move. For a car, book the vehicle and passengers with the ferry operator and allow for the queue. Avoid a tight mainland flight connection after an island departure.
Choose the castle visit you want
Kuressaare Castle charges €13 for the adult museum ticket. The €18 combination also covers Mihkli Farm and Aavik's House Museum. Those are separate visits, and the farm needs an onward transport plan. A lower temporary-exhibition ticket is a different product from the main museum.
The winter schedule begins in mid-September, with Monday and Tuesday closures outside the listed exceptions. Match the date to the current calendar and arrive before the last-admission time. Leave time afterwards for the park and seafront instead of fitting another distant stop into the same afternoon.
Keep a countryside day realistic
Choose one part of Saaremaa to explore, then check how you will get back. A rental car can help when your chosen sites are spread out, but the rental day, fuel and parking belong in the trip cost. A local bus may work for a specific place while being unsuitable for a circular sightseeing route.
Kuressaare Airport is close to town; bus 2 and taxis are listed by the island tourism office. Check the actual bus against your flight rather than assuming it waits for every arrival. If you prefer a simple break, the town, castle and a booked spa visit can fill your stay without a car.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Example for one traveller using one individual bed. Chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace the room and visits with your bookings. Add intercity and airport travel separately; replace the attraction allowance with selected admission rather than counting it twice. An individual bed or dorm is not guaranteed on your dates; use the whole room price if needed. Add chosen spa treatments, island travel or car hire separately. Replace the stay allowance with your actual seasonal quote.

Kuressaare Castle
€13.00🛏️ Where to Stay
Choose the centre for cafés and the coach station, or the castle and seafront area for easy walks. Check whether spa access is part of the room rate and whether you need a car for the outings you want.
🚇 Getting Around
Walk around central Kuressaare and the castle. For places elsewhere on Saaremaa, check the complete bus journey or arrange a vehicle; short distances on an island map do not guarantee frequent buses.
Airport transfers
The airport is about 3km by the local visitor guide’s description. Bus2 and taxis are arrival choices. Check the dated bus connection against the flight; if it does not fit, arrange a taxi and ask for the full fare to your address.
🥖 Eating for Less
Buy picnic supplies in town before a countryside outing. For dinner, compare the full menu and opening days near your room rather than relying on a remote stop being open.
Worth Paying For
Kuressaare Castle's museum ticket costs €13 for an adult. Its €18 combination covers additional museums, which need separate travel and opening checks.
Skip / Save Your Money
Enjoy the castle surroundings and seaside walks before adding a tour. Keep one town day if arranging a car would make a short break more complicated.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A bus to Saaremaa crosses by ferry but continues to Kuressaare. Do not buy an extra ferry ticket without checking what your through coach ticket already covers.
