Choose the palace ticket before the city card
Begin with the Palais des Papes ticket page, which sets out the current combinations of palace, gardens and bridge access. The visitor experience is changing during 2026–2027, so use the description attached to the ticket you select. A combined ticket is useful only if you want all of its parts.
The Avignon CityPass inclusion list adds visits in Avignon and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. For one palace visit and an old-town walk, start with the individual admission. For several museums over two days, write down their prices and opening days before buying the pass.
Leave room for the town itself
Our suggested day is a morning palace visit, lunch, then the streets inside the walls and a walk towards the Rhône. If you want Les Halles for food, put that stop in the morning and keep the palace booking clear of the lunch period.
For an onward trip, the tourist office’s practical FAQ helps with local arrangements. Use the full station name in every booking: Avignon Centre is not Avignon TGV. That small detail matters more to the day than saving a few minutes on the fastest train.

Palais des Papes (Popes Palace)

Where to Stay
For the first visit, choose inside the walls near a route you can walk from Avignon Centre station. If you prefer a quieter street, check the distance to restaurants as well as the main sights. A room near Avignon TGV serves a different purpose from one in the old town.
Getting Around
Avignon Centre and Avignon TGV are separate stations. Book the final connection to the station that suits your accommodation. Once inside the walls, combine the palace and old-town streets on foot instead of paying for several short rides.
Eating for Less
Use Les Halles as a morning food stop and choose a few picnic items or a simple lunch. Do that before the palace time slot, so the next available table does not decide the shape of the afternoon.
Worth Paying For
A Palais des Papes visit is the most useful paid anchor if the papal history is what brings you here. Add the bridge only if you want to walk on it, rather than buying a combined ticket automatically.
Skip / Save Your Money
Keep a walk through the streets inside the walls for the afternoon. The palace square and views of the Rhône give you time outdoors without adding another interior admission.
