Around the Vieux-Port, Marseille is busy, steep in places and closely tied to the water. Le Panier and Mucem fit a central sightseeing day; the coast deserves a separate outing. The tiny harbour ferry is useful when you would rather cross the water than walk around it.

Cross the harbour, then explore on foot
Begin at the Vieux-Port and choose which side you want to explore first. The Ferry Boat costs €0.50 for the short crossing. It saves a walk around the water when the next stop is on the opposite quay. Treat it as a harbour crossing, not a substitute for an offshore boat trip.
From the northern side, build a walking outing around Le Panier and the waterfront. Allow time for steps and a shaded pause. Keep a long Calanques outing for another day so you do not end up rushing both the city and the coast.
Give a free museum enough time
The tourism office’s free-museum guide identifies the municipal collections. Pick one that suits your interests and check the named exhibition before buying anything. Free permanent admission does not mean every temporary show is included.
Take water for the walk and choose lunch before setting off up another hill. A smaller takeaway meal can leave room in the budget for a planned seafood dinner, if that is part of the trip you want.

For a first stay, the Vieux-Port area is convenient for harbour walks and transport. Choose near Saint-Charles for a short stop with an early train, but plan the route with your luggage because the station approach can involve steps and slopes.
Getting Around
The little Ferry Boat crosses the Vieux-Port for €0.50. It is useful for getting to the opposite quay as well as for the short ride itself. Longer sea crossings and coastal boat trips are separate services with separate tickets.

The official city tourism tariff lists a €15 adult single, or €16 with onward RTM travel. For a quick meal, look at bakery counters and takeaway shops around the streets behind the harbour before choosing a waterfront table. If you want bouillabaisse, make it a planned restaurant meal and read the menu’s portion and ordering conditions first.
Worth Paying For
Choose the Mucem exhibitions for an interest in Mediterranean societies and culture. Exhibition admission is €11, while the first Sunday of each month is free. The building, outdoor spaces and paid exhibitions are different parts of the visit.
Skip / Save Your Money
Marseille’s municipal museums offer free permanent collections. Use the city’s museum list to choose one by subject; temporary exhibitions and special visits can still have charges.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The €0.50 harbour crossing is not a sightseeing cruise to the islands or Calanques. Choose the boat for the destination you want, and leave extra time for weather-dependent sailings.
