Choose one coast sector for the day
The regional guide to D-Day sites without a car starts from rail towns including Caen, Bayeux and Carentan. Use it to pick a specific museum or beach and the last part of the journey. Rural services can be limited, so write down the return departure before spending time at the first site.
For a first visit, our suggested approach is one coastal sector with a museum and time outside. If you want several sectors without driving, a guided outing can solve the connections. Compare the time at each stop as carefully as the price.
Bayeux is still a base, but the tapestry museum is closed
Bayeux Museum states that the tapestry museum is closed for works, with reopening planned for autumn 2027. Bayeux can still be a useful rail base for the D-Day area, but that is a different reason to stay from seeing the tapestry locally.
Keep Mont-Saint-Michel as another part of the trip with its own travel day or base. Trying to combine it with several D-Day sites in one short outing leaves too much of the day on the road. Give the places that matter to you enough time to be more than a stop beside a car park.
The abbey and the village have different entry rules
At Mont-Saint-Michel, the village is freely accessible, while the abbey is a paid visit. Standard abbey entry is €16 through 30 September 2026 and €13 from 1 October through 31 March 2027. Book for the abbey if its rooms and history are part of your plan; you do not need that ticket just to enter the village.

Where to Stay
For the D-Day coast, Bayeux or Caen provides a rail-connected base and evening services. Choose a coastal village if you want to stay by the sea and have the transport to match. Mont-Saint-Michel is a different base decision from a short Bayeux visit.
Getting Around
Trains reach Caen, Bayeux and Carentan, but the coast needs another leg. Use the regional tourism office’s car-free D-Day guide to identify the bus stop nearest the chosen museum or beach, then settle the return service before leaving town.
Eating for Less
Buy lunch supplies before a coastal outing if the route includes long gaps between towns. A bakery stop in your base is more predictable than hoping for food beside every memorial or bus stop.
Worth Paying For
A small guided D-Day outing can be useful without a car when it joins the sites you care about and explains their history. Read the actual stops and museum admissions, rather than choosing the tour with the longest list of beaches.
Skip / Save Your Money
Choose one coastal sector and give it time. Paying for several distant museums in the same day can leave little time for the beaches and memorials that connect their stories.
