A base that lets you eat and travel easily
For a rail-based Loire stay, choose a room with a straightforward walk to Tours station and the centre. Read longer-distance tickets carefully: some use Saint-Pierre-des-Corps instead. Leave a connection buffer rather than treating the two names as interchangeable.
The city’s market schedule lists the outdoor Carreau des Halles market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. That gives a food-shopping morning a definite place in the plan. On other days, choose the food shops that are open rather than expecting the same outdoor stalls.
One château with a simple final walk
Chenonceau’s own arrival page places the railway station about 400 metres from the ticket office. This makes it a useful first château when you do not have a car. Pick the entry time after allowing for the walk and any queue.
Our suggested rhythm is a morning train, the château and grounds, lunch, then the return to Tours for an evening in the old centre. A second castle is better left for another day unless its transport and entry time clearly fit.

For a first stay, look between Tours station and the old centre. A room near Place Plumereau suits evenings out, while a quieter nearby street may suit an early train better. Saint-Pierre-des-Corps is a different station and needs its own transfer plan.
Getting Around
Use Tours as the search point for local outings, but read whether your longer-distance train uses Saint-Pierre-des-Corps. For Chenonceau, the château says the station is about 400 metres from its ticket office, making it a practical car-free visit.
Eating for Less
The outdoor Carreau des Halles market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Buy picnic ingredients before your train if you want a simple lunch at a permitted stop during the day; keep food packed away inside the château.
Worth Paying For
Choose Chenonceau for a focused castle outing with rail access. Book the entry slot and both train directions together so you have time for the house and grounds without a rushed departure.
Skip / Save Your Money
Leave a Tours afternoon for the old streets and Loire riverside. A second château admission in the same day can add more rushing than enjoyment.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A ticket to a town with a famous château does not always take you to the château gate. Chenonceau is particularly convenient because of its nearby station; research the final leg separately for other estates.
