Stepantsminda is the practical town for the Kazbegi area. Stay at least one night if the mountain landscape matters; a same-day return from Tbilisi leaves little room for weather or a slower walk. Check the exact location of the accommodation, especially if it is above town or across the river.
Gergeti Trinity Church can be approached in different ways depending on conditions and ability. Ask locally about the permitted route, road and weather. Other valleys and longer walks need their own navigation, daylight and transport plan. A general view of the mountains is not proof that a high route is safe.
Prepare for rapid weather changes
Carry layers, water and suitable footwear even when Tbilisi is warm. Turn back with enough daylight. If visibility or conditions are poor, use a shorter valley walk, town time or a café instead of chasing a viewpoint.
Confirm the return before a long walk
Minibuses normally use the central departure area, while a driver uses an agreed pickup. A direct minibus and a sightseeing transfer with stops are different products. Check the Georgian Military Highway and keep the next Tbilisi evening flexible.
