Separate Kutaisi city, the railway stations and the airport
Begin with the market, river area and central streets. Kutaisi is compact enough for an easy first day, but the places most often added to the trip, such as Gelati or nearby caves and canyons, require transport and should not be stacked together without a clear route.
Stay in the centre for walking and meals unless an early airport departure is the main reason for the night. Kutaisi International Airport is outside the city. Kutaisi I and Rioni railway stations are different arrival points, and a ticket described only as Kutaisi may not solve the final transfer.
Choose one regional outing
Gelati can form a focused heritage visit. A cave or canyon is a different, more weather-sensitive day. Confirm current access, transport, waiting and the return before paying a driver. If the weather is poor, use the city, market and museums rather than spending the day moving between closed or uncomfortable outdoor sites.
Read every westbound ticket carefully
For Tbilisi, compare rail and road by the exact departure and arrival. For Batumi, check whether the trip starts in Kutaisi city or at the airport. Airport-linked coaches can follow flight schedules and different boarding rules.
