Get to the cathedral market before lunch
The Münstermarkt runs Monday to Saturday, ending at 1.30pm on weekdays and 2pm on Saturdays. The north side has food producers and the well-known Lange Rote sausage stalls. Buy what you want while the market is open, then leave the afternoon for art or a hill walk.
For a view, Kanonenplatz on the Schlossberg is freely accessible. Choose the walking route only if the uphill section fits your mobility and energy; the viewpoint and a paid ride are different decisions.
Know what the museum and guest card include
The Augustinermuseum lists €12 adult admission and free entry for under-27s. Its Black Forest section is closed for rearrangement until 10 October 2026, while other collections remain available.
For outings beyond the city, KONUS comes through a participating overnight stay. It can cover eligible regional transport and Freiburg’s city buses and trams, but not mountain railways or ski lifts. Ask the accommodation whether it issues the card before counting that saving in the room comparison.
Where to Stay
For a short stay, choose the old town or the route from Hauptbahnhof if you want most city outings on foot. For a countryside base, ask whether the specific accommodation issues KONUS and what local journey is needed back after dinner.
Getting Around
A KONUS guest card can cover eligible regional transport and city buses and trams, but only when issued through a participating stay. It does not include mountain railways or ski lifts. Get the card’s actual coverage before treating a Black Forest outing as prepaid.
Eating for Less
The Münstermarkt opens Monday to Saturday around the cathedral, finishing at 1.30pm on weekdays and 2pm on Saturdays. Try a Lange Rote sausage or buy bread, cheese and produce for lunch. Arrive before the end of the market, not after an afternoon museum visit.
Worth Paying For
The Augustinermuseum costs €12 for adults and is free for visitors under 27. It is a useful art visit near the old-town streets. Bring proof of age if using the free admission category.
Skip / Save Your Money
Kanonenplatz on the Schlossberg is a freely accessible viewpoint. Walk up if the slope suits you; the view does not itself require a ticket, even though transport up the hill can be a paid choice.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The Augustinermuseum remains open while its Black Forest section is being rearranged through 9 October 2026. Those rooms reopen on 10 October. Choose it for the available art collections rather than expecting every regional display during the works.
