Give Palamidi a cooler part of the day
The fortress dominates the town, but the climb is an outing in its own right. Set off with water and shoes suited to steps, then leave time for the return. The familiar “999 steps” story is a legend, not a reliable measure of the effort involved.
Palamidi's official visitor page lists a €20 ordinary adult ticket. There is also an upper entrance reached by road. That can reduce the climb from town, though the fortress itself still has changes in level. Decide on the approach before arranging a taxi or setting off on foot.
Keep the first evening close to the room
The lower old town and waterfront make an easy introduction after the journey from Athens. Pick a few streets to wander, then sit down for a meal when you are ready. There is no need to book a paid activity just to fill the arrival afternoon.
Before reserving an old-town apartment, check the number of steps, the floor and where a vehicle can stop. A short distance on a map can feel longer with a suitcase. Ask about night noise if the room faces a busy restaurant street.
Use the right Athens coach fare
KTEL Argolida lists €15.70 for a single between Athens and Nafplio, or €29 for its return product. The operator describes the route as about 150 km and 2 hours 10 minutes. Leave room for traffic and the journey across Athens to the departure station.

Add one regional visit if the return works
Mycenae and the theatre at Epidaurus are separate excursions. Use KTEL's route list to find the actual site service and the day it operates. Check the return first, allowing enough time at the entrance and exhibits. A bus to a nearby settlement can still leave an awkward final journey.
If public transport gives you too little time, compare an organised trip or a shared transfer with the full cost of a rental day. For a short Nafplio stay, keeping one afternoon free may be a better choice than trying to include both sites.

Palamidi Fortress
€20.00Booking and rates: Choose the long staircase from town or arrange transport to the upper road entrance. The site ticket does not include that transport. Avoid the exposed climb in the hottest part of the day.
Ways to save: The town waterfront offers views of the fortress without entering. Follow any local path closures rather than relying on an old walking map.

Compare menus in the streets behind the waterfront as well as beside it. A simple lunch and one longer evening meal can work better than paying for a view at every stop.
Worth Paying For
Palamidi is worth considering if you enjoy fortifications and broad views. Take enough time for the climb and the interior instead of treating it as a short stop before the coach home.

Skip a car for a stay focused on central Nafplio. Hire one or choose a day trip only when the places you want to reach justify the extra transport and parking costs.

Do not assume a regional bus to a village stops at the archaeological entrance. Check both the site name and the return timetable before committing to Mycenae or Epidaurus.
