Let the ferry arrival help choose the room
Chora puts the main harbour and many evening options close together. Agios Georgios can suit a stay that mixes the town with time on the sand. For a room farther along the coast, check the transfer from the port and the bus home after dinner before deciding it is cheaper overall.
Ask about the final walk with bags. The lower town and harbour are different from the stepped lanes around the Kastro. A room with a terrace may involve several flights of stairs.
Walk to Portara when conditions suit
The municipal tourism guide places the Temple of Apollo's surviving gateway on Palatia, reached by a paved footpath from town. It is an outdoor landmark, so you can see it as part of a town walk without buying a guided excursion.
The exposed approach deserves care in strong wind or rough conditions. Follow local access signs and keep clear of the edge. Sunset is one option, but you can enjoy the view at another time if the path is crowded.
Give the beaches and villages separate days
For a beach outing, check the current Naxos KTEL timetable, the actual stop and the final return. A bus route shown in summer may have fewer departures later in the season. Bring enough water for the wait as well as the time on the beach.
For the interior, start with one village such as Halki rather than a long list. Work backwards from the bus home and leave time for a meal or short walk. If the services do not join up, choose a guided outing or another day instead of assuming you can always find a taxi at the next stop.
Keep island hopping simple
Seajets' route network includes Naxos with Santorini, Mykonos and other Cyclades stops, but the sailing for your date decides what is practical. Book the connection before fixing a short hotel stay around it. Port transfers and boarding time can turn a short crossing into a substantial travel day.
Our Cyclades itinerary gives Naxos several days before Santorini. Use the Santorini–Naxos route for the port details, then search your direction. If you are returning to an international flight through Athens, leave a suitable buffer rather than relying on the last possible ferry.
Use the daily budget as an allowance you can change. A beach day with a simple lunch and a paid excursion day will have different totals; they do not need to fit one supposedly exact island average.

Try a simple bakery lunch on a travel day and compare full menus for dinner. A room with a kitchen can help if you plan to shop, rather than leaving it unused while paying a larger room bill.
Worth Paying For
Choose an inland village outing if you want a change from the coast, or spend on one activity that matters to you. Portara's outdoor setting and a town walk do not require a packaged tour.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip trying to see several distant villages between the first and last bus. One place with time for lunch is often more useful than a series of hurried stops.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Check both ferry dates before planning a short visit to another island. A nearby island on the map may have a sailing pattern that leaves little time for a day trip.
