- Late spring and early autumn suit walking. Summer theatre and festival dates can be a reason to come, but book the room around them and expect hot afternoons.
Use the squares as a walking route
Begin around Széchenyi Square and Kárász Street, then continue to Dóm Square. The broad spaces are part of the pleasure of Szeged: look up at the façades and take time in the shade rather than hurrying from one entrance to another.
The Cathedral Visitor Centre offers exhibitions and tower visits as well as the church setting. Go to Mars Square before lunch
The market is a practical food-shopping stop and a place to look for paprika to take home. Read the weight and whether it is sweet or hot before comparing prices. A small sealed packet that you will use is often more useful than a decorative string. Mars Square market.
For a meal, look for halászlé if you enjoy fish soup. Ask which fish is used and whether the serving contains bones. If sharing several dishes, order gradually so you can judge the portions instead of buying a large set menu immediately.
Keep a riverside part of the day
After the central sights, walk towards the Tisza for a change of pace. Choose a route back while you still know which bridge or stop you are using. In hot weather, this part of the day is easier outside the strongest afternoon sun.
For a paprika-focused outing beyond the centre, the Paprika Mill and Museum is in Röszke, about 10 kilometres south of Szeged. It requires its own transport and opening-time check, so treat it as an excursion rather than an extra stop on the central walk. Paprika museum.
Leave from the correct station
Search your departure using the station printed on the booking in MÁV’s planner. If travelling onwards across a border, allow for the complete journey and document checks instead of using a domestic train time as the whole estimate.
Where to Stay
Look around Dóm Square and Kárász Street for a short walk to the main sights. The main railway station and Mars Square bus station are different arrivals, so match the location to your ticket.
Getting Around
Walk between the central squares and river, then use the local network for the station or a more distant visit. Read the stop and direction before boarding; not every tram in the centre goes to the main railway station.
Eating for Less
Mars Square market is a useful morning stop for produce and paprika. Compare package weights and ask whether the paprika is sweet or hot. For a sit-down meal, a fish soup is worth choosing for the dish itself, not an assumed tourist-menu bargain.

The Cathedral Visitor Centre offers a closer look at the building and access options for the tower. Choose the ticket for the parts you want, and check the stairs before booking a climb.

You can spend a satisfying afternoon on Kárász Street, in the squares and beside the Tisza without paying for every interior. Leave room in the budget for a meal you will enjoy.
