Daugavpils Travel Guide

Daugavpils is a worthwhile longer stop when the Rothko Museum and fortress interest you. Keep the city centre and fortress as separate parts of the stay rather than rushing both between trains from Riga.

Make the museum the reason for the journey

Check the Rothko Museum's current exhibitions and tickets before choosing travel dates. The €10 adult museum ticket, €6 originals-gallery ticket and €16 combination with Martinsons House cover different visits. Buy the one that fits your interests, not simply the lowest number in the list.

The museum notes that its own ticket desk does not add the external online seller's service fee. Online booking may still be convenient; compare the complete price and conditions. Ticket sales finish 30 minutes before closing, and exhibition changes can affect access.

Walk the fortress at its own pace

Allow time around the museum for the fortress streets, gate and outdoor spaces. This is a substantial area with buildings still in use, not a single castle courtyard. Stay on public access and avoid entering closed or residential parts.

The fortress visitor service offers guided walks by arrangement. A guide can add context if military and city history is your main interest. Confirm the language and meeting point; that booking is separate from museum admission.

Give the centre some time too

Keep a central walk and a meal for the arrival afternoon, then use the next day for the fortress and museum. This takes the pressure off a delayed train and gives you room to stay longer with an exhibition you enjoy.

A central room can simplify food and the onward journey. A stay near the fortress is a different choice, so work out how you will get back after dinner. Do not assume every late arrival has a convenient local bus waiting.

Plan the journey as a travel day

The Riga–Daugavpils route takes roughly three to three and a half hours by direct train, according to the city visitor service. Check Vivi for the date and station, then allow the final journey to your room. An out-and-back day can involve more than six hours on trains before local travel.

Two nights give you one full day between arrival and departure. If your trip is already a short circuit of the three Baltic capitals, add time before including Daugavpils. The Latvia guide helps you choose between the eastern city, the Gauja towns and the west coast.

Example spending plans

Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.

Example for one traveller using one individual bed. Chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace them with your bookings. Add intercity and airport travel separately. Replace the attraction allowance with chosen admissions rather than counting both. A dorm or individual bed is not guaranteed; use the whole room quote if that is what you book.

Check sources before booking

Rothko Museum

€10.00
Booking & Rates: Check current exhibitions; ticket sales finish 30 minutes before closing. External online booking can add a service fee, unlike the museum desk.
Ways to save: Museum €10, originals gallery alone €6, museum plus Martinsons House €16. Concessions need eligibility.
Verdict: Give the art enough time and combine it with a separate fortress walk.

🛏️ Where to Stay

Stay near the central streets for meals and an easier railway arrival, or choose the fortress area deliberately for its museum setting. Check the evening journey between the two.

🚇 Getting Around

Riga trains take roughly three to three and a half hours. Use local transport or an arranged ride when the walk between the centre and fortress does not suit your day.

🥖 Eating for Less

Eat in the centre before a long museum visit and check the food options near your accommodation. On arrival, buy anything you need before heading away from the main streets.

Worth It

Worth Paying For

The Rothko Museum's adult ticket is €10; the originals gallery alone is €6, and the museum plus Martinsons House is €16. Choose by the art you want to see.

Use the public fortress streets and outdoor spaces for a walk, with paid interiors and guided tours chosen separately. Respect residential areas and closed buildings.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes

The Rothko originals gallery, the museum and the Martinsons House combination are different tickets. Do not assume the cheapest gallery ticket covers every exhibition.
