Gdańsk combines riverside streets with museums that deserve unhurried visits. Spend time in the Main Town, choose one major history museum, then use another day for Oliwa, the coast or nearby Sopot.

Give the Main Town a relaxed first day
Begin around Długi Targ and the Motława, then explore the smaller streets before choosing where to eat. A waterfront address is pleasant, but it is not a reason to accept a menu without clear portions and prices. Fish may be priced by weight; ask what your complete plate is likely to cost.
For a three-day stay, keep one day for the centre, one for a major museum and one for Oliwa or the coast. In poor weather, swap the outdoor day with the museum booking. There is no need to visit every museum simply because they are close on a map.
Choose your museum before choosing a free day
The Museum of the Second World War lists a regular main-exhibition ticket at 33 PLN. Tuesday entry to the main exhibition is free, but tickets must be collected at the desk and numbers are limited. The museum closes on Mondays. Leave enough time to read and take breaks; it is a demanding subject.
The European Solidarity Centre focuses on Solidarity and the movement for political change. Choose it for that story, rather than treating it as a second version of the war museum. The nearby shipyard area and the Main Town make different walks.
Get from the airport to the station you need
The railway station at Gdańsk Airport is connected to the terminal by a covered footbridge. For Gdańsk Główny or Śródmieście, the airport's directions show a change at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz. Follow the departure display there for the onward train.
POLREGIO operates the airport service; SKM is the familiar local railway along the coast. Choose a ticket that covers the actual operators and journey. Do not reuse a Warsaw or Kraków ticket rule here. For an early flight, check the first useful departure before reserving a remote room.
Use Sopot as a simple coastal outing
Take SKM to Sopot station for a town and beach day. Check the direction and departure platform, then buy or validate the ticket as its instructions require. Our Gdańsk to Sopot guide explains the short rail journey.
The beach and the pier are separate choices. Sopot's pier charges admission during the published paid season; you can enjoy the promenade without making it a paid attraction day. Allow extra time for the station walk and a meal before returning.
Keep the budget in separate parts
Use the daily card as a spending example, then replace the room and meal allowances with your own choices. Add the airport journey, a Sopot outing and paid museums where needed. A local-travel allowance is not an unlimited ticket covering every rail, tram and boat service.
Where to Stay
Stay around the Main Town for evening walks, or near a useful rail station for airport and coastal journeys. Check the actual entrance and luggage route in waterside apartment buildings.
Getting Around
Walk the historic centre and use trams or trains for the wider city. SKM links Gdańsk with Sopot and Gdynia; select the correct rail ticket rather than assuming a city tram ticket covers it.
Eating for Less
Read the full price for fish, especially when it is listed by weight. Compare sides and drinks as well as the main dish before choosing a waterside table.
Worth Paying For
The Museum of the Second World War is a substantial visit, with a regular main-exhibition ticket of 33 PLN. The European Solidarity Centre offers a different story around the shipyard and civic change.
Skip / Save Your Money
Keep the Motława walk and beach time free of extra purchases. A boat trip is optional; check its actual route and return before buying.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Do not plan a museum visit, Westerplatte and a beach afternoon as if they were all next door. Each needs its own travel time.
