Keep the city and the islands on different days
Put Haga and Linné together, with enough time for a café and a walk. Another half day can follow the central waterfront. These areas make a more comfortable arrival plan than immediately committing to an island ferry after a long train journey.
For the southern archipelago, start with the day's weather and the return timetable. Travel towards Saltholmen, then take the public ferry for your chosen island. Pack something to eat when a café's opening hours do not fit. A swim or a long coast walk is optional; a short walk and an unhurried ferry ride can be enough.
Use the current transport prices
The Västtrafik fare table lists SEK 38 for an adult single in one zone, SEK 125 for 24 hours and SEK 250 for 72 hours. Four separate singles cost SEK 152, so a day ticket can help on a day with several journeys. A short central walking day may need no pass.
A single ticket lasts 90 minutes within one zone. An app ticket starts when bought, so do not purchase it long before leaving. Check the ticket area for trips beyond Gothenburg; zone A is not a ticket for all of western Sweden.
Arrive at the stop that fits your room
At Landvetter Airport, Flygbussarna serves Korsvägen and the Nils Ericson terminal beside Central. The time to an intermediate stop is shorter than the full trip. Compare the coach fare with the public-bus connection through Landvetter resecentrum, which needs a change.
Keep the airport journey separate from the city pass unless the selected operator explicitly includes it. For a late flight, check the last onward tram as well as the airport coach.
Leave room for a change of weather
Choose your indoor visit before the trip, then move it to the wetter day if tickets allow. Keep a waterproof layer handy on the coast. The Stockholm connection and Malmö connection let you continue by rail without returning to the airport.

Skip a car for a central city break. For an island outing, choose one island you can explore slowly rather than trying to collect several ferry stops.

Do not confuse a public island ferry with a sightseeing cruise. Check the island, sailing and last return before boarding. Getting to Saltholmen also takes time.
