Start with the lakefront
Make the promenade your first outing, especially after a train journey. The station sits above the shore, so check the route to your accommodation with luggage before assuming the shortest map line is the easiest walk.
Keep the Freddie Mercury statue as part of that walk. If music history interests you, add Queen: The Studio Experience when it is open. Its free admission does not require you to buy an unrelated tour.
Plan Chillon as a half-day outing
You can combine the lakeside approach with a bus or train in one direction. The castle's visitor information explains access, opening hours and ticket categories. Standard adult admission is CHF 15; the Montreux Riviera Card rate is CHF 7.50. The listed Swiss Travel Pass arrangement is different again, so show the product you actually hold.
The visit includes stairs and uneven historic spaces. Read the access information if anyone in the group needs a step-free route. An exterior view is not the same experience as exploring the rooms, but it can suit a shorter outing.
Match the local card to the trip
The Montreux Riviera Card comes through qualifying regional accommodation. Its free local transport follows a defined area. Do not use it as though it covers every railway or boat on Lake Geneva.
For a mountain day, compare the Rochers-de-Naye fare with your particular card or pass. Check the weather and the last return before buying. A mountain discount only saves money if that is a journey you want to take.
Give Vevey its own time
Vevey can be an alternative base as well as a short outing. Compare how many of your planned trips start there and how much evening time you want in Montreux. There is no need to move rooms just to see another town along the same railway.
During a festival, book the performance you care about first and build transport around its finish time. A last train that works after an ordinary dinner may not work after a late show.
Continue towards the Alps

Eating for Less
Pick up a picnic before a lake walk, or compare lunch menus in Montreux and Vevey. Fish on a menu is not automatically caught in the lake; ask if that matters to you.
