Hotel deposits, cleaning fees and late check-in
Before choosing a room, check what you will pay, what may be held on your card and how you will get in. These details matter most on short stays and late flight arrivals.
Ask what the deposit means
Is it a payment taken now, a refundable security deposit or a temporary card authorisation? Ask for the amount, accepted card type, name required on the card and release conditions. A promised release date and the date your bank makes the money available may differ.
Use the total for the stay
Include mandatory cleaning or service charges shown in the terms, not just the nightly headline price. Check whether local taxes are included or collected separately and whether charges are per person, per night or per booking. Keep a copy of the final price breakdown.
Confirm a late arrival
Send the expected arrival time, including airport travel. Ask about reception hours, self check-in, key collection and any late-arrival charge. Save the instructions offline. If your flight changes, contact the property rather than assuming the original arrangement will still work.
If a charge is disputed
Compare the charge with the terms you accepted. Send the booking confirmation and receipt to the property or booking platform, and ask for a clear explanation. Keep the reply before considering the next complaint route.
