Follow the Dovre line north
SJ NORD runs the Oslo–Trondheim trains on the Dovre line. A daytime journey takes about seven hours. Search the actual departure for works, replacement transport and arrival time before booking the room. This is a different railway from the Oslo–Bergen line, so the two cities need separate travel days.
For a daylight trip, reach Oslo S with time to find the platform and your carriage. Keep a meal and drink available if you do not want to rely on the onboard choice. Trondheim S is close to the waterfront side of the centre; check the walk or local connection to your particular address.
A night train is a different kind of booking
The night service may save daytime travel, but a seat and a sleeping compartment are not equivalent. Compare the complete price for your party, the sleep you expect to get and when you can leave luggage at your destination. Removing a hotel night only works if you are comfortable spending that night on the train.
Fares depend on the departure and conditions. Check SJ NORD and Entur for the full quote. Do not count on a fixed cheap fare or assume that a restricted ticket can be moved to another service after a late connection.
Keep the first Trondheim outing simple
After arriving, Bakklandet and the river give you a manageable introduction. Save Nidaros Cathedral for a visit with enough time and an opening slot that suits you. A cathedral ticket and an AtB transport pass are separate purchases.
Flying can be useful when time matters. Compare the entire journey, including Oslo's airport transfer and the train or coach from Trondheim Airport. The airport train takes about 35 minutes to central Trondheim and accepts the relevant AtB zone A ticket; commercial airport coaches have their own fares.
