Compare two different surface routes
The coastal bus approach uses FRAM's Trondheim–Kristiansund–Molde corridor and the onward connection towards Ålesund. Current route numbers include 905 and 100. Search Trondheim to your actual Ålesund stop in Entur or FRAM, since the best change point and waiting time depend on the departure.
The other approach uses SJ NORD south to Dombås, the Rauma train to Åndalsnes and a FRAM bus to Ålesund. This is a scenic choice with more changes, not a direct train between the cities. Compare both complete journeys if the landscape is part of why you are travelling.
Leave space for connections
Do not plan this as a short hop based on the map distance. Coastlines, ferry sections and the railway's inland route affect travel time. Use the planner's arrival time, then add the walk or local bus to your room. Keep the evening free of a booking that would be expensive to miss.
Check which operator issues each ticket and whether the whole connection is included. A local pass for Trondheim does not cover the entire intercity trip. Save the departure stop, any change stop and the final stop on your phone; similar town names are not enough when several platforms serve different routes.
Arrive with a simple first plan
Ålesund's central harbour and Art Nouveau streets make a good first outing after you have left your bags. The Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE visit needs its own opening-time check. Keep the Aksla viewpoint for a clear spell rather than treating it as compulsory on arrival.
For an onward flight, Vigra Airport is outside the centre and has its own coach connection. Avoid joining a long intercity bus journey directly to a flight without a useful margin. Staying in Ålesund the night before is often easier to plan.
