Choosing your journey
Take an ordinary bus from Valletta towards Rabat and Mdina. Route 51 takes roughly 30–40 minutes to the Mdina stop, before the walk through the gate. The adult day fare is €2 in winter or €2.50 in summer; allow extra time for waiting and traffic.

Route 51 weekday examples take about 34 minutes from Valletta C2 to the Mdina stop; Sunday evening examples take about 28. Board at Valletta Terminal
Malta Public Transport's current Rabat and Mdina guide directs travellers from Valletta Terminal to Rabat on buses 50, 51, 52, 53 or 56. Rabat is the gateway to Mdina, so check the destination and stop displayed for your selected bus before boarding. The operator page and the date-specific journey planner are safer than a timetable copied into an old guide.
Separate Rabat from Mdina
The bus journey does not place you inside every part of the walled city. Rabat and Mdina are adjacent places with different stops and walking approaches. If you are carrying luggage, look at the final walk to Mdina Gate before choosing a hotel or a sightseeing start. The route page identifies the Mdina gateway and current stop listings show Mdina as a named stop on the surrounding routes.
Use the ordinary bus ticket
The current MPT fare table shows €2.50 for a summer Day Routes ticket and €2.00 in winter. A regular ticket lasts two hours and allows transfers during that validity. Buy or tap the product that matches your date, and do not assume a night, special or TD ticket has the same price. Keep the bus ride separate from any Mdina or Rabat admission.
Plan the return before the quiet streets
Check the return direction and last practical departure before entering the old city. Waiting time, road traffic and the walk to the stop can change the full outing even when the route number is correct. If you are continuing to the airport, Malta Public Transport lists TD1 from Rabat to Malta International Airport, but check the airport service separately in the planner.
Leave room for the old city
Mdina works best when the transport plan leaves time for the gate, the narrow streets and a meal in Rabat or nearby. Choose one main paid visit and keep the rest of the day flexible. A bus fare is only the city-to-city part of the budget; add any attraction, food and onward journey separately.
