Free museum visits in Europe
Use a few reliable free-entry options to shape your trip. Check booking rules and exhibition exclusions before rearranging the day.
Free museum entry works best when it fits the day you already want to have. A short evening visit can be excellent value; spending half a day travelling across a city for a free hour may not be.
Start with the collection you want to see, then check its admission rules. “Free museum day” can mean a limited time window, selected galleries or an offer restricted to particular visitors.
Three useful options
Check the museum's own calendar again for your date, particularly on public holidays.

Use the Prado visitor page, Louvre admission page and British Museum website for bookings and exceptions. The Prado's usual free period is 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 7pm on Sundays and holidays, but shortened opening days need a separate check.
Plan a smaller visit
Choose a few rooms, an artist or a particular period before arriving. Free hours near closing are a poor time to attempt an entire major collection. Allow for the entry queue and remember that galleries begin clearing before the building's advertised closing time.
Book directly through the museum where a free reservation is offered. A zero-price ticket can still have a date and time attached. Save the confirmation on your phone and bring any proof needed for an age or residency concession.
Leave a little flexibility afterwards. A fixed restaurant reservation immediately across town can turn the final galleries into a hurried walk to the exit.
When paying makes sense
If this is the main reason for your city visit, a paid morning slot may give you the time you want. Compare the saving with your other costs, including transport and another night's accommodation if you would need to extend the trip.
You may also qualify for youth or student admission on an ordinary day. Check that first: there is no advantage in queuing for a free evening if your normal entry is already free.
Use Madrid’s two art museums separately
The Prado’s free collection period is its final two opening hours; temporary exhibitions are half price in that period. Reina Sofía has its own free-admission arrangements, and a free visit still needs the relevant ticket. Its usual Tuesday closure makes it a poor backup for a Prado visit that day.
