Youth and student discounts in Europe
Age, residence and student status are different qualifications. Check the exact rule and bring the document that proves you meet it.
Being a student does not unlock one standard discount across Europe. A museum may use age and residence, a rail pass may use your age on the first travel day, and a theatre may require a particular student card.
Before paying for any discount card, list the places you genuinely plan to visit and check their own admission pages. Add up the savings you qualify for, not the headline discounts advertised for other visitors.
Check what the discount is based on
At the Louvre, under-18s qualify for free admission regardless of nationality. Under-26 citizens or qualifying residents of the European Economic Area also qualify, with appropriate proof. A student card alone does not establish either nationality or qualifying residence.
For an Interrail youth pass, the relevant age is 27 or younger on the first travel day under the published conditions. That is different from an offer described as “under 26”. Check whether Interrail or Eurail is appropriate for your residence before choosing the pass.

Bring the right evidence
Look for the section called eligibility, concessions or supporting documents. It should tell you whether staff need photographic ID, proof of residence, a valid student card or a combination.
Keep the document accessible, rather than buried in a suitcase. A photograph of a card may not be accepted where the original is required. Check the expiry date before travelling and ensure the booking name matches your identification.
Do not choose a reduced online fare just because the website allows you to click it. Eligibility can be checked at entry or on the train, after the payment has gone through.
Work out whether a card pays for itself
Make a small comparison using your own itinerary:

If the savings barely exceed the card cost, flexibility may be more useful than buying it. A cancelled museum visit should not make the entire plan poor value.
Check ordinary free museum entry too. Some of the best savings require neither a student card nor a paid membership.
