Kosovo declared independence in 2008 and is recognized by over 100 countries. It is one of the safest, friendliest, and easiest countries in Europe for independent travelers.
1. The Important Serbia-Kosovo Border Rule
If you plan to visit both Serbia and Kosovo, you must understand the border crossing rules to avoid being denied entry by Serbian border police:
- Entering Kosovo from Serbia and Returning to Serbia: 100 percent fine. You enter Serbia legally, visit Kosovo, and return to Serbia.
- Entering Kosovo from Albania, Montenegro, or North Macedonia, and then attempting to enter Serbia directly: Serbian authorities do NOT recognize Kosovo border control stamps as legal entry into Serbian territory. If you entered Kosovo from Albania or North Macedonia, Serbian border guards will turn you away.
- The Simple Solution: If entering Kosovo from Albania or North Macedonia, exit Kosovo back into North Macedonia (Skopje) or Montenegro, and then enter Serbia from North Macedonia or Montenegro.
2. Currency & Language
- Currency: Kosovo unilaterally uses the Euro (€). Prices are low; espresso is €0.80 to €1.00, and full meals rarely exceed €6.00.
- Language: Albanian is the primary language, with Serbian spoken in Serbian enclaves. English is widely spoken among young people.
