The Air and Sea Schengen Expansion

On March 31, 2024, Romania and Bulgaria officially joined the Schengen area for air and maritime borders ('Air Schengen').

1. Flights Within Schengen Are Passport-Free

  • Flying between Bucharest or Sofia and Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, Vienna, or Athens now operates as domestic terminal transfers without border control passport booths.

2. Land Borders Retain Document Checks

  • Driving, bus, or train crossings over land borders (such as the Giurgiu-Ruse Danube Bridge between Romania and Bulgaria, or the Kulata border into Greece) still require physical passport inspections.
  • Always carry your physical passport when crossing over land.

3. The 90/180-Day Rule Applies

  • Time spent in Romania and Bulgaria now counts against the 90-day maximum limit allowed in any 180-day window across the entire Schengen zone for non-EU passport holders.
