Understanding the Divided Capital
Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the last divided capital city in Europe, partitioned since 1974 by a United Nations buffer zone known as the Green Line.
The Pedestrian Checkpoints
The most convenient pedestrian crossing is right in the center of the walled city at the northern end of Ledra Street (Rruga Ledra).
- Process: You walk past the Republic of Cyprus police checkpoint (show passport), walk 50 meters through the UN buffer zone, and present your passport to Turkish Cypriot border officers.
- Visas: EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and Schengen visa holders do not require an advance visa; a standard 90-day tourist entry stamp or digital record is issued instantly.
- Crossing Back: You can cross back and forth as many times as you like during the day.
Key Practical Differences Across the Border
- Currency: The southern Republic uses the Euro (€). The northern section uses the Turkish Lira (TRY), though Euros are widely accepted in souvenir shops and restaurants.
- Major Sights in the North: The Büyük Han (a beautifully restored 16th-century Ottoman caravanserai with craft workshops and courtyard cafes) and the Selimiye Mosque (formerly the Gothic Saint Sophia Cathedral).
