Liechtenstein from Sargans: a day trip or overnight stay

Liechtenstein is small, but a good visit still needs a plan. The first decision is whether you treat it as a day trip from Sargans or stay overnight so you have time to slow down.

If you have only a few hours, base them on Vaduz and drop the idea of covering the whole country in one go. Two nights in one base can support three days without moving bags each morning, but leave room for arrival and departure time. Compare the full cost of accommodation plus transport before booking, because a cheaper room far from a bus stop may not save anything.

Arriving from Sargans

Sargans is a useful railway gateway from Switzerland. The route is a train to Sargans and then a bus to Vaduz Post, and roughly 90 to 120 minutes from Zurich is a useful planning allowance. This is not a direct train to Vaduz. Line 11 connects Sargans, Vaduz and Feldkirch, and timetables change by day and departure, so check the current timetable for your date. Buy your ticket from the driver or activate an electronic ticket before boarding.

A simple plan in Vaduz

Vaduz is the practical base for museums and bus connections. Schloss Vaduz is a private royal residence and is not open to visitors. The outside view is about 20 minutes uphill from the town centre, and there is no bus or parking at the castle, so treat it as an optional climb rather than a flat town stroll. In the centre, Kunstmuseum and the Hilti Art Foundation share a standard combined ticket of CHF 15, and entry is free every Wednesday. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00, Thursday until 20:00, and is closed Monday apart from listed exceptions. Pick one museum if your time is short.

Tickets and onward travel

Adult full-price LIEmobil tickets are CHF 3 for one zone, CHF 4 for two zones and CHF 5 for three or more zones on a single journey. Day tickets are CHF 5, CHF 7 and CHF 9. Choose a ticket covering the zones you travel through, including your cross-border starting point. A one-zone ticket does not cover the whole network. A CHF 9 network day ticket may suit several journeys. The Swiss Travel Pass is accepted on LIEmobil buses, so check an existing pass before paying again.
