Visiting the World’s Oldest Republic

Perched atop the dramatic vertical cliffs of Mount Titano in central Italy, San Marino has maintained its sovereign independence since 301 AD.

How to Get There

  • Take any Trenitalia train along the Adriatic line to Rimini station.
  • Right outside Rimini station (in front of Hotel Napoleon), board the Bonelli Bus / Benedettini shuttle departing every 75 minutes.
  • The bus climbs the mountain up to San Marino Piazzale Calcigni in 45 minutes for €6.00 each way (tickets bought directly from the driver).

Top Sights

  • The Three Towers (Guaita, Cesta, Montale): Hike the scenic Witches’ Pass (Passo delle Streghe) linking the medieval stone fortresses.
  • Piazza della Liberta: Watch the changing of the guard by the Guardia di Rocca in green-and-red uniforms.
