St Peter’s Basilica and dome: plan the visit you want

St Peter's Basilica can be a complete visit on its own. Ordinary entry is free, while the dome, guided visits and optional booking or audio services have their own arrangements. Start with the part you want to see, then choose whether a paid extra adds enough to your day.

Approach through St Peter's Square

Follow the signed visitor entrance and security process. A reservation does not remove security checks. Services and special events can change visitor access, so read the Basilica's current access information before setting out.

Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and pack lightly. Leave a large bag at your Rome accommodation when possible. The Basilica is a working church: keep photography, conversations and movement appropriate to the areas open for visitors and worship.

Decide whether the dome climb suits you

The official dome product offers a stairs route or a lift to the terrace level. The lift does not remove the remaining climb. Narrow and steep sections mean this is a different physical commitment from a ground-level Basilica visit.

For an online dome booking, read the confirmation's sequence carefully. The current product says the Basilica slot may be one hour before or one hour after the dome visit, depending on visitor flow. Do not follow an older instruction to arrive exactly 90 minutes before every dome booking. Your own voucher gives the relevant entrance and time.

Check the final price and inclusions for the product and date you choose. The dome ticket does not include the Vatican Museums. If the climb is unsuitable, spend the time in the Basilica and Square instead; the view is an optional addition, not a requirement for a worthwhile visit.

Keep the Museums on a separate plan

The Sistine Chapel belongs to the Vatican Museums visit, whose entrance is on Viale Vaticano. Leave time for the outside walk, food and a separate security process if doing both.
