San Marino entry: prepare for the whole Italy journey

A visit to San Marino normally forms part of a journey through Italy. Check the documents for that whole trip before adding a day or a hotel night. A small border crossing does not create a new permission to remain in Europe.

Start with your own nationality

For British citizen passport holders, the UK's San Marino entry guidance explains the short-visit rules and travel through Italy. For other passports or a special residence status, ask the responsible authorities how the rules apply to you.

Carry the actual required passport or travel document and any relevant visa or residence permission. Check that the planned return into Italy is covered. Longer stays, work and residence have different requirements from a sightseeing visit.

Keep souvenirs separate from border records

A tourist-office stamp is a keepsake, not an immigration exit stamp or a new entry allowance. Put it in a notebook or souvenir document. Do not rely on it when calculating a permitted stay or explaining a travel history.

Prepare the practical return too

The international bus to Rimini is separate from San Marino's domestic buses. Save the correct departure and stop, then allow time before an onward train. An easy outward border crossing is not evidence that every part of a tight return will run to schedule.
