Bologna to San Marino: planning a train-and-bus day trip

A San Marino day trip from Bologna is possible, but give it the whole day. The route uses a train to Rimini and a separately booked bus uphill. Keeping your main bag in Bologna makes the transfer and town walk much easier.

Choose the return before the morning train

Open the Bonelli timetable for your date, choose an outward and return bus, then fit trains around them. The published bus journey takes about 55 minutes each way and costs €7 single. A new timetable applies from 15 September 2026, so use the date shown on the document rather than a saved summer screenshot.

Leave a sensible gap in Rimini for delays, the platform walk and finding the bus. On the way back, an hour's buffer before a separately booked train is a planning choice worth considering, not a guarantee against every disruption.

Keep the hilltop plan focused

From Ex Stazione, Park 2 Bus, walk into the old centre. Look around Piazza della Libertà, have lunch and choose the towers or an indoor museum. Read the tower guide before buying admission, and keep the current Palazzo Pubblico closure in mind.

Change the plan if you want an evening

A reserved bus guarantees carriage on that departure, not a seat. Reach the stop early and keep the correct ticket available. If a slow dinner is important, compare an overnight stay instead of trying to extend a day trip beyond the transport that makes it work.

The two-day Borgo and San Marino plan includes one room night and keeps the daily spending separate from the international buses and trains. That can be a better use of time than making the same long return in one day.
