Bologna or Milan for a two-day visit?

Pick Bologna for a compact centre and long meals, or Milan for the art, design and big-city visits you want to book.

On this page

Bologna makes it easy to build two days around walking and food. Milan gives you a wider choice of major art, design and shopping visits, with more movement between neighbourhoods. Choose the city that contains what you actually want to do, then compare the full travel cost.

Two days in Bologna

Spend the first day around Piazza Maggiore, the market streets and Santo Stefano. Leave time for lunch rather than treating it as something to fit between monuments. The covered walkways are part of daily life as well as the city's heritage. Bologna Welcome's porticoes guide helps you choose a section to explore.

On the second day, decide between museums in the centre and the uphill route towards San Luca. The latter is a proper walk, so give it space in the day and choose an easier alternative if heat or mobility makes the climb unappealing. Do not assume all tower attractions are open while restoration work continues.

Two days in Milan

Build one day around the Duomo area and a nearby museum or neighbourhood. On the other, give priority to a visit that needs a reservation. If that is Leonardo's Last Supper, consult the museum's booking guidance before you commit to travel dates.

Keep some of the afternoon for Brera or the Navigli area instead of filling every hour with ticketed attractions. The metro can make a less central hotel workable, but the station's location matters more than a vague “near the centre” description.

Check the airport behind the fare

A flight labelled Milan may use a different airport from the one you expected. Add the transfer fare, journey time and first or last service to your comparison. Do the same for Bologna, then compare two nights with the same cancellation terms.

If Bologna is part of a longer stay, our San Marino day-trip guide explains the extra planning needed for a trip through Rimini.

Leave room for the visits that are open

Bologna’s Asinelli Tower is closed, so do not build the trip around its former climb. Choose the porticoes, university area or a museum instead. In Milan, the Duomo rooftops and cathedral combinations are separate products; choose the route and access method you want.

Use the Bologna and Milan guides to match each city to the time and airport connections you have.
