Lucerne or Interlaken for a Swiss base?
Choose Lucerne for a city, lake and mountain mix, or Interlaken for access to the valleys and excursions of the Bernese Oberland.
Lucerne is a city you can enjoy between mountain trips. Interlaken is especially useful as a transport base for the Bernese Oberland. If you only have a few nights, choose the base closest to your main plans rather than spending each morning travelling across Switzerland.
Lucerne gives you more to do in town
The old town, bridges and lakefront can fill a gentle arrival day. For a mountain outing, the Rigi boat and train loop combines several kinds of travel without needing a car.
A wet day still needs a plan, but Lucerne has substantial indoor options. The Swiss Museum of Transport is outside the immediate old-town centre. Check its different attractions and ticket choices before treating every cinema or experience as part of basic admission.
Choose accommodation by the actual walk to the station or bus stop. A lakeside view is pleasant, but it may add time to early departures.
Interlaken puts the mountain network closer
Look at the official excursion choices, then choose a small number that fit your budget. Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald First and other mountain trips are separate journeys with their own tickets and operating conditions.
Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West are different stations. Check which one serves the journeys you expect to make most often. If your trip is mainly about one valley, also compare a stay in Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. A village base may reduce daily travel, while Interlaken offers more flexibility for trips in different directions.
Keep one day movable
Cloud, wind and maintenance can change a mountain plan. Avoid buying a chain of non-changeable excursions simply because the itinerary looks tidy. A lower-level walk or a lake visit may be a better use of a cloudy day.

Moving between the bases
The Luzern–Interlaken Express takes about 1 hour 50 minutes. An ordinary ticket is accepted; an individual seat reservation is optional and costs extra. That makes a useful moving day, but repeatedly riding both ways takes time from your visits.
If First or the Eiger area is the priority, also compare Grindelwald. If the town, lake and Rigi matter most, start with Lucerne. Keep Interlaken for a plan that benefits from access in several directions.
