When to visit Switzerland for walking or snow
Choose by altitude and activity, then check the lifts and trails your trip depends on before booking around a season label.
For Switzerland, the most useful question is how high you want to go. A lakeside walk and a high Alpine trail can have different seasons on the same date. Choose the activity first, then check the route and transport that make it possible.

Spring does not open every walking route
Lower paths and towns may feel spring-like while high trails remain snow-covered. If a particular hike is the purpose of your holiday, ask the local operator about its usual season and current conditions. Flowering dates also vary with altitude and the year's weather.
Some lifts pause for maintenance between their main seasons. Check each excursion separately rather than deciding that an entire month is either ideal or useless. A city-and-lake stay can still work when a mountain connection is closed.
Summer gives more options, with limits
Summer is a useful period for many mountain walks, but it does not guarantee clear skies or snow-free ground on every route. Start with a route suited to your experience, watch the forecast and leave time for changes. Thunderstorms and low cloud can affect a day even when the valley is warm.

Autumn and winter need a different plan
Autumn can bring good walking days, earlier snow and shorter daylight. Winter is a separate season for skiing, prepared winter paths and town visits. Do not follow a summer hiking map through snow as if nothing has changed.
If you want flexibility, compare Lucerne and Interlaken and keep one mountain day movable. Book the view when conditions suit, where ticket rules allow, rather than filling every day with a fixed summit reservation.
Match the booking to the type of day
For a city-and-lake trip, a few operating museum choices and a useful local transport card may matter more than a summit webcam. For a walking holiday, choose the route and a base close to its access point before paying for accommodation.
A mixed plan can use Lausanne for upper-town and lake days, or Grindelwald for mountain access. Neither base removes the need to check the excursion itself. Keep the arrival day simple so a late train does not cost you a weather window.
