Switzerland is essentially two different countries depending on whether you visit for green alpine meadows or deep winter snow.

The "Dead Months": April and November

• In November and late April / May, many high-altitude cable cars, funiculars, and mountain hotels close for annual safety maintenance. Trails are often slushy or muddy with melting snow. Avoid these shoulder transition months for mountain hiking.

Summer Hiking: July to September

• High-altitude alpine trails (above 2,000m) are fully snow-free only from late June through late September.
• July brings lush wildflowers across the Bernese Oberland and Zermatt.
