When to visit Italy for cities, coasts and walking

Italy can work in every season, but the same itinerary will not feel the same in April and August. Choose dates around what you want to do most. Long city walks, beach days and mountain routes each need a different plan.

Spring and autumn can make outdoor walking more comfortable, but famous museums and monuments still attract visitors. Book the visits that need a time slot and leave gaps between them. Rain is possible, and a warm afternoon can still require a break.

Winter can suit a museum-focused trip if you are happy with shorter daylight and cooler evenings. Check weekly closing days, holiday hours and heating when comparing accommodation. Do not assume every indoor space will be warm or every attraction empty.

Italy's official holiday information lists 15 August as Ferragosto. Some businesses take a longer holiday around it, while many places serving visitors remain open. The useful question is whether your chosen venue and transport service operate on your date.

Coastal and holiday areas can be busy. Reserve essential journeys and a restaurant you particularly want, but avoid turning the entire day into a chain of bookings. In hot weather, keep long walks for a cooler period and build in rest.
