When to visit France by region and activity
Choose dates for the part of France you will actually visit, with separate plans for cities, coasts and mountains.
France does not have one best travel season. A week of walking in Paris, a Mediterranean beach holiday and an Alpine hiking trip need different conditions. Start with the region and the activity, then compare dates and prices.

Cities and coastal trips
Spring and autumn can be comfortable for city walks, but rain, heat and popular events remain possible. Give each day an indoor option and check the opening calendar for the museums you care about.
On the Mediterranean coast, summer suits a holiday with beach time and active seasonal services. If walking is more important than swimming, compare dates outside the hottest period. Atlantic and Channel coast trips need a different expectation of wind and changeable weather.

August is not a nationwide shutdown
Some independent businesses take holidays, while many visitor attractions and services continue operating. Check the particular restaurant, shop or museum rather than assuming the city has closed. Coastal destinations may be especially busy as domestic holiday travel adds to international visits.
If your plans depend on a small restaurant or workshop, contact it before travelling there. Keep a second option nearby instead of spending an evening crossing town to a closed door.
Mountains need a separate calendar
Lift maintenance, remaining snow and weather can affect a mountain visit outside the main seasons. A warm valley does not confirm that a high trail is open. Check the resort's current operation and route notices before paying for accommodation around one excursion.
