Paris or Lyon for your next French city break?

Choose Paris if your trip revolves around the Louvre, Eiffel Tower or a particular exhibition. Choose Lyon if you want a shorter city itinerary with time for meals, riverside walks and historic neighbourhoods. Lyon has plenty to offer on its own, without needing to be sold as a cheaper version of Paris.

Give Paris a smaller daily area

For a first visit, make one booked attraction the centre of each day. Pair the Louvre with nearby streets and the river, for example, rather than adding Versailles that afternoon. The Louvre's visitor information includes entry arrangements and room closures, which help you choose what to see before you arrive.

Look at metro access when comparing hotels. A room farther out can work well, but include the journey to your main sights and any stairs or changes that matter to you. A low nightly rate is less helpful if it adds difficult travel twice a day.

Explore Lyon at street level

Start in Vieux Lyon, then cross towards the Presqu'île for lunch and a walk. The city's traboules guide explains the passages through courtyards and buildings. Use only entrances open to visitors, keep voices low and respect the people who live there.

Allow extra time and energy for Fourvière or the slopes of Croix-Rousse. Lyon is not entirely flat, and not every historic passage provides a through route. Its UNESCO listing concerns the historic site, not every part of the modern city.

Compare dates before comparing reputations

Check room prices, train fares and major events for the same dates. A busy conference or festival can change the cost in either city. For a two-night stay, a direct journey may matter more than a small hotel saving.
