Taking the train between France and Italy
Choose between the Paris–Milan route and the Riviera crossing, with a September 2026 works notice to check first.
Travelling soon? The direct Paris–Milan rail route has an engineering closure from 12 September to 9 October 2026. Both Trenitalia France and SNCF list the interruption. Check your exact departure before arranging hotels around it.
Outside the closure, the useful starting question is where in France you are leaving from. Paris to northern Italy and Nice to the Italian Riviera are different journeys. There is no single border crossing that makes sense for everyone.
Paris, Lyon, Turin and Milan
Search both operators for your travel date. Compare the actual station, arrival time and fare rules, as well as the price. A ticket bought from one operator does not automatically let you board the other's train.
Read the station name in full. Milan and Turin have more than one station, and a change of station can add a local journey to your connection. Keep that transfer in your plan instead of treating it as spare time.
If the direct service is unavailable, look at the whole alternative route before buying separate legs. A journey through Switzerland may be possible on your date, but it is not automatically a cheap or protected replacement. Ask the seller what happens if the first train is late.
Crossing from Nice through Ventimiglia
For the coast, check TER's Nice–Ventimiglia planner, then the onward Italian train. Ventimiglia is called Vintimille in French information.
There are also works affecting Nice–Ventimiglia services during 2026. A timetable from an earlier trip is not enough. Check the date-specific result and avoid a tight connection to the last onward departure.
Carry travel documents, water and something to eat. Keep tickets available offline, particularly when separate operators issue separate booking references. Leave bags where you can manage them during a platform change.
