Free cathedral visits in Europe
Notre-Dame in Paris and Rouen offer free cathedral entry. Check towers and special visits separately, and note Cologne's new tourist ticket.
A cathedral visit can be a rewarding part of a low-cost city day, but free entry is not a rule that applies everywhere. The main church, tower, treasury and guided tour can each have different admission arrangements.
Check the exact part you want to visit before reserving. A paid tour advertised beside a cathedral's name does not necessarily mean the ordinary church entrance costs money.
Notre-Dame in Paris
Entry to the cathedral is free. Notre-Dame offers free reservations through its own website; check available slots close to your visit. You do not need to buy a third-party ticket simply to obtain ordinary cathedral entry.
Keep the visit separate from any tower or special guided experience you may be considering. Read what an advertised package includes before paying for it.
Give yourself time outside as well as inside. Looking at the building from more than one side makes a better visit than treating the entry queue as the whole attraction.
Rouen Cathedral
Rouen's tourism office lists free entry to Notre-Dame de Rouen. Its calendar shows seasonal opening arrangements, so check the day you plan to come.
Build the visit into a walk through the historic centre. Keep a café or another nearby stop available if worship, an event or a temporary closure interrupts sightseeing. An active church cannot promise unrestricted visitor access throughout the day.
Cologne changed in July 2026
Cologne Cathedral's official ticket service says tourist admission requires a ticket from 1 July 2026. Older lists describing the whole cathedral visit as free are now misleading. The tower and treasury have their own ticket options.
Entry for worship, personal prayer or lighting a candle remains free through the specified entrance. That access serves those purposes; it should not be treated as a way around the tourist ticket.
Leave space for the building's everyday life
Check photography rules when you enter, keep conversations quiet and avoid walking across areas reserved for worship. If a service begins, follow the stewards' directions about where visitors may go.
For towers, check the stairs and access arrangements before purchasing. An ordinary church entrance being accessible does not mean its tower has a lift.
