The French Riviera in May or September
Compare walking conditions, sea time and event dates, without expecting either month to be quiet or inexpensive everywhere.
May and September can both work for a Riviera holiday, but they suit slightly different priorities. May often appeals to visitors planning walks and town visits. September can be attractive if time by the sea matters, although swimming conditions still depend on the day and the beach.
May has a busy event calendar
Do not assume May means low demand. The Cannes Film Festival ran from 12 to 23 May 2026, a useful example of why dates matter more than the month label. Check the next edition's programme before booking a stay in or around Cannes.
Monaco's motorsport calendar also needs checking separately. Event dates can change between years, so do not automatically place every Grand Prix in May. Nearby towns may offer alternatives, but compare the actual room price and transport before expecting a saving.
For a walking-focused trip, pack for cooler evenings and possible rain. Spring sunshine does not mean the sea will feel warm enough for everyone.
September has a different balance
The sea has had the summer to warm, which can make September more appealing for swimming than early spring. That is a seasonal tendency, not a guarantee. Wind, rain and local water conditions still matter. Use the Riviera beach information to choose the type of beach you want, then follow the day's flags and notices.
Daylight is shorter than in early summer. Keep a coastal walk's return within comfortable daylight, and check whether boat trips or beach businesses have changed their schedule.
Choose a base for the days you will take
Nice can suit a mix of city time and rail trips, while another town may be better if you mostly want to stay by one beach. A week with two carefully chosen excursions can be more relaxing than moving along the coast every day.
